Getting through this thing called life can be difficult for anyone. At times, it feels like there’s nowhere for us to slow down and sort through the noise of the day. A moment to breathe, and just maybe, let our shoulders drop, as we find our way back into our body. Maybe you’re in need of that kind of space.

I am a white, cisgender, queer man, and clinical social worker. I work from a relational and anti-oppressive perspective that is influenced by my own life experiences and my years of working with clients. I provide trauma-informed and affirming care to support individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, addiction, life-changes and transitions, self-esteem, and gender and sexuality exploration. My work is collaborative and building a relationship out of respect, authenticity, and care with you is the foundation of our work together. I believe that with someone in your corner, you can drop shame and build the confidence to live a full and genuine life.

I have a Masters in Social Work with a specialization in gender and sexuality from Temple University. I consider myself affirming, kink positive/knowledgeable, and poly inclusive in my work.

Great therapy can be self-affirming, life-saving, and transformative. My highest motivation as a therapist is to help people reconnect with their internal sense of self-knowledge and live in a more authentic way. I work within individuals in a DBT and somatic IFS model, which provides practical skills, psychoeducation and a guiding philosophy as well as a more speculative internal curiosity towards your belief systems and inner thought processes. I work with individuals to process systemic and interpersonal traumas. Therapy frequently becomes an opportunity to reflect not only on past experiences of pain, but also an opportunity to reflect on what our values, goals, and desires are. Within a conversation about our limitations, boundaries, wants, needs, and preferences, we’re able to better understand what is standing in the way between ourselves and our most fulfilling life. In that tension, we have the opportunity for choice and in those choices we have the opportunity to better understand ourselves, our motivations, and to create greater meaning and connection.

Within my work with couples I utilize the Gottman Method. I work with couples who have experienced attachment injuries within their relationships or have a history of insecure attachment styles. I work with couples who are navigating new responsibilities, challenges, or curiosities in their relationships. I have experience working with couples exploring kink and ethical non-monogamy. My work as a couple’s therapist is primarily to support the existing friendship between partners and to help partners reflect on concrete skills (e.g., conflict management strategies) but more importantly, helping partners appreciate more deeply the vulnerabilities and history their partner brings into a relationship and understanding what that means for receiving and offering love in their particular relationship.

I am a Registered Social Worker and a Silberman School of Social Work graduate with a Master’s degree in Social Work. Over the past seven years, I have worked with adults in community-based programs, private practices, and non-profits in a therapeutic role. I have also worked with 2SLGBTQ and poly couples, unhoused and 2SLGBTQ youth, grieving community members, young people involved in the criminal justice system, and dual diagnoses. Some of my most rewarding work has been with identity integration for neurodiverse populations, 2SLGBTQ individuals, and men.

My name is Melaney and I am passionate about treating trauma related concerns. I’m a trauma survivor myself and over the last five years working as a therapist in the public system I’ve developed extensive experience working with several trauma therapy models such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), and I have been recently trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I worked for three years in the community of Antigonish with adults experiencing a wide range of mental health presentations including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and currently I work with children and families impacted by trauma and attachment injuries in Halifax. I am excited to begin offering my services to folks in the private sector as well!

I completed my MSW at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus) with a focus on treating mental health and addictions from a trauma-informed, harm reduction approach. My practicum was in the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood where I gained much experience and insight into working with trauma and addictions. In Vancouver I also became interested in the therapeutic potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy and I’m currently wrapping up psilocybin therapy training through TheraPsil. I look forward to psychedelic-assisted therapy becoming legal and accessible over the next few years and I’m passionate about psychedelic harm reduction.

Other therapy models I draw from include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC). I also use the Collaborative Problem Solving model (CPS) in working with families and children with behavioural issues. Another area of interest of mine is supporting clients through loss, grief and the mourning process. I am committed to social justice and incorporate compassion into my work with clients.
